Prenatal examination

Better safe than sorry!

Of course you would like to know if your child is all right. Especially if you have reason to doubt this. The investigations are there to provide insights and / or exclude matters. That provides peace and security. Different types of investigations are possible. You decide whether you want to have examinations done.

Better safe than sorry!

Of course you would like to know if your child is all right. Especially if you have reason to doubt this. The investigations are there to provide insights and / or exclude matters. That provides peace and security. Different types of investigations are possible. You decide whether you want to have examinations done.

Prenatal screening

You can have your unborn child examined for a number of congenital disorders. This is called prenatal screening, you can choose 2 examinations:

  • Prenatal screening for Down, Edwards and Patau syndrome
    (the NIPT or combination test)
  • Examination of physical abnormalities (20 weeks of ultrasound)

More information
You decide whether and which examinations you want to have done. For extensive information about this, we refer you to onderzoekvanmijnongeborenkind.nl (Dutch site). On this website you can find a lot of information and watch a movie with an explanation about this screening. You can also enter the ‘conscious choice‘ (Dutch site) decision aid in support. During your first appointment with us we will, if desired, also discuss these possibilities for research.

Prenatal diagnosis

If there is a certain condition in your family, you are sometimes eligible for prenatal diagnosis. The exams that are part of prenatal diagnostics are the flake test, amniotic fluid puncture and extensive ultrasound examination at the UMCG. Diagnosis is also offered for an increased risk due to prenatal screening.

Investigate further or not?
If you are eligible for prenatal diagnosis, you decide whether you want to use it. It is also possible to choose not to do anything. Prenatal diagnosis is not the same as prenatal screening. Prenatal diagnostics are used to investigate whether or not the unborn child has a particular disorder. Prenatal screening only calculates the likelihood of a certain congenital disorder.
