Practical issues

After delivery, a few practical matters should be arranged. A birth declaration must be made and the health insurance needs to be informed that the baby is born. Someone will visit for a hearing screening and the newborn blood spot screening (heel prick). It is also important to work on the recovery of your body by doing pelvic floor muscle exercises.

Prepare in time

Apply for your baby's birth certificate

It is mandatory to make a birth declaration within 3 days after the birth of a baby in the municipality where the child was born. The declaration is often made by one of the parents, usually the father. If this is not possible (in unique situations), someone who was present at birth may also make a declaration.

What to bring:

  • A valid ID
  • If applicable, your wedding booklet
  • If applicable, a copy of the certificate of recognition / or the certificate with the choice of name

Where to apply?

  • Dienst Informatie en Administratie van de gemeente Groningen (DIA), which is the service Information and Administration of the municipality Groningen.
  • Martini Hospital

Heelprick and hearing screening

Home visit by GGD
Someone from GGD Groningen will visit you between 4 and 7 days after the delivery for the hearing test and heelprick. The GGD is automatically informed after the declaration of your child, therefore it is important to apply for the birth certificate as soon as possible. The child’s blood is examined for 17 rare but treatable diseases. Early detection of these diseases provides better treatment options and a better future for your child. You will receive the results of the screening within 3 weeks after taking a blood sample.

Hearing test
The hearing screening will be carried out at home by means of a small soft cap in the ear containing a small microphone and a speaker. This screening does not hurt. Sometimes the test has to be repeated a few days later for a correct result. Both ears are tested separately.  More information

Exercises and advice after delivery

If you have had a vaginal delivery, your pelvic floor muscles are stretched and bruised. In addition, they can be damaged by a cut or a crack. After caesarean section, your pelvic floor is less burdened by childbirth, but weakened by pregnancy. The pelvic floor often feels different after giving birth, sometimes you cannot feel well when you have to relieve yourself. Fortunately, these complaints are usually temporary. To advance recovery, it is important that you take good care of the pelvis, lower back and pelvic floor after the birth. When you feel a bit better, which can be a few days after the birth, you can start slowly with exercises for your pelvic floor.

Exercises are often described in the care plan of the maternity center. We have added in collaboration with Physiotherapy ‘de Vuursteen’, pelvic floor exercises, which you can do shortly after the birth. Click on this link. It is important to do the exercises in a relaxed manner. Therefore, try to take your time and rest for the exercises daily.
